If you would love to have a water feature in your backyard, take a look at the many different pond plan ideas you have to choose from. The great thing about designing your own pond is that it can be as unique as you want it to be.

Ecosystem Pond Plan Ideas

Ecosystem ponds contain living organisms such as plants, animals and microbes as well as non-living parts such as rocks, gravel, water, soil and air. These components interact with each other to form their own little self-maintaining "bubble of life".

When planned out and set up properly, ecosystem ponds can create a complete, low-maintenance system that works together with nature to provide food, shelter, and safety to the wildlife and plants that live in and around it.

Recreational Pond Plan Ideas

A recreational pond is a natural pond that is also used for recreational purposes such as swimming and paddling. Recreational ponds are usually divided into two areas: one area for vegetation and the other area for swimming. They are a great, environmentally alternative to a traditional swimming pool that requires harmful chemicals to stay clean.

Pondless Waterfall Ideas

If you are not ready to install a full-sized pond in your backyard, but you would still like a water feature, a pondless waterfall is a great choice. Pondless waterfalls:

  • Take up very little space

  • Usually cost less than installing a full-sized pond

  • Require very little maintenance

  • Are safe if you have small children as there is no pool of water
