Small Pond Spring Cleanout 2025 - What You need to Know

If you have a small pond on your property, you can greatly benefit from a small pond spring cleanout after a long winter. In this article, we'll go over the basics about pond cleanouts and what you need to know.

At Epiphany, we have been helping homeowners install and maintain ponds and water features since 2011 - and we'd love to share our experience and expertise with you!

Today, we'll take a look at why you should get a thorough cleanout for your small pond, the different options Epiphany Ponds provides, and more. So, let's get started!

Why You Need a Small Pond Spring Cleanout

If you have a small pond on your property, you probably know that year-round maintenance is important! Otherwise, you may start to notice an overgrowth of algae, murky water, and excess debris floating around. In Southern Ontario, we are hit with hard winters and cold weather that lasts usually from November until March.

Before the winter months set in, we have beautiful autumn weather. However, with autumn comes lots of falling leaves. These leaves often make their way into ponds, and can quickly build up. This is especially true for small ponds, as there is less space for leaves to disperse.

Excessive debris in your pond is often what contributes to algae. Too much algae can have a negative effect on your pond's appearance and on any creatures (such as koi or goldfish) that live in your backyard pond.

It's important that pond owners take the time to perform pond maintenance at least once per year to ensure your pond stays clean and healthy. Infrequent or improper maintenance will potentially lead to serious problems down the road, may harm your fish if you have a fish pond, and require much more extensive maintenance to fix.

When set up properly and maintained at least once per year, small ponds actually require little maintenance. However, it is important to get regular spring cleanouts to keep your pond low maintenance throughout the rest of the year!

Spring Pond Maintenance By Epiphany

At Epiphany Ponds, we are dedicated to helping homeowners across the Northumberland, Peterborough, Bowmanville, and Durham Region make the most out of their ponds. That's why we offer high-quality small pond spring cleanout services to help keep your pond well maintained and healthy throughout the year!

How Does It Work?

Step 1: First, you'll want to fill out our Spring Cleaning Request Form. This simple downloadable form is found here on our website. Remember, many homeowners have ponds and perform yearly spring cleanouts! It's important to book ahead to make sure your pond is taken care of as soon as the ice begins to thaw.

Step 2: On the day of your scheduled pond cleanout, have your garden hose outside, and ensure waterfall pumps and other components are readily available. Ensure your water garden electrical outlet is turned on.

Step 3: It's cleanout time! Epiphany will empty your pond of all the water and temporarily store any fish you have. We will then:

  • Pressure wash your pond

  • Thoroughly rinse it

  • Vacuum it

  • Trim and fertilize your aquatic plants (as necessary)

We'll also check your bulbs and fixtures, readjust rocks, and finally, install your water pump.

Step 4: If your pond has fish in it, we will refill your pond to include enough water for your fish and re-introduce your fish back into your pond. Note: If you have a very large pond, you need to finish the refilling process and installing your water pump.

Although spring maintenance is important, there are other maintenance options as well that you can consider if you want to ensure your small pond is as healthy as possible.

At Clearwater, we also offer:

  • Fall Maintenance - Fall maintenance helps you 'winterize' your pond by getting your pond ready for the cold winter.

  • Algae, Leak, and Renovation Services - If you notice an issue with your pond such as algae overgrowth or a leak, get maintenance as soon as possible before a small problem turns into a large one!

  • Fall Netting Services - Prevent a build-up of leaves over the winter with netting services. Preventative maintenance to ensure less work in the spring and a healthier pond over the winter.

Pond Essentials

If you have a small backyard pond, it's important to have all the right equipment to ensure your pond can maintain itself in-between cleanouts and to keep any fish you have in your pond healthy. Here are some essential pond products that you should make sure you have in a small backyard pond with fish:

  • A Filtration System - You should have both a biological and a mechanical filter system, such as the BioFalls (which helps colonize helpful bacteria and remove excess nutrients from the water) and a Pond Skimmer (which pre-filters your water and houses your pump).

  • Pond Liner - Your pond liner helps keep water cleaner and, importantly, keeps water in your pond!

  • Rocks & Gravel - Both rocks and gravel help protect your pond liner and provides surface area for bacteria to properly break down any excess nutrients in your pond.

  • Recirculating System - You'll need a proper size pump for the size of your pond, as your pump will help circulate the water and keep your fish and plants healthy.

Setting up your pond with the right products is one of the best ways to have a quality, long-lasting, healthy small backyard pond. If you want to learn more about the products you should choose, contact Epiphany to learn more!
